Glacier Chorale returns live with inspiring choral repertoire
Two special MasterWorks concerts will be performed during November for the 39th season of the Glacier Symphony and Chorale, with the first showcasing the Glacier Chorale under the direction of Micah Hunter Nov. 13 and 14 in performances titled “Reflection.”
The program reflects on the evolution of choral writing from the 16th century with a work by Palestrina, all the way to the 21st century, including a piece by Glacier Chorale tenor and composer, Marshall Jones. Jones is currently Director of Music Ministries at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kalispell and teaches composition, applied piano and keyboard skills at Flathead Valley Community College.
The Chorale will perform a number of late 19th and 20th century works by such well-known composers as Edward Elgar, Igor Stravinsky and Charles Ives. Other 21st century works include an arrangement of a traditional spiritual by the late Moses Hogan, and some familiar favorites for Glacier Chorale audiences, like Vinjay Singh’s “Let Peace Abound” and “Weep No More,” by David M. Childs after a poem by Keats, which features just the Chorale’s sopranos and altos.
“We are so pleased to once again be able to take to the stage ‘live’ after our annual November concert was unfortunately canceled last year due to the pandemic,” Hunter said. “In crafting this program, I have chosen pieces that do truly ‘reflect’ on the topics of isolation, love and spiritual and religious themes, and also utilize the full dynamic range, choral sound, and harmonic capabilities of the choir. “
The concerts will take place at the Performance Hall of Glacier High School at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14. All patrons and individuals are strongly encouraged to wear facial coverings while in attendance at the venue. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 406-407-7000.
