Fall Mack Days enters final weekend
The 2021 Fall Mack Days Fishing Event on Flathead Lake, sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, is in its final week and will end Sunday, Nov. 14.
A total of 12,939 lake trout have been entered to date. The weekend's total was 1,088 lake trout, on Friday 426 lake trout were turned in, on Saturday 462 lake trout were turned in, and on Sunday 200 lake trout were turned in.
Anglers are bringing in lake trout trolling, jigging, and casting.
Help in this effort to restore the native fish populations on Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake historically was filled with native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout. People tell stories of watching the “flats” rising in the evenings in Big Arm Bay and what a beautiful sight it was.
Elders have told about ice fishing out by Wildhorse Island and having to make larger holes in the ice to get the bull trout out. Anglers out in boats caught bull trout that were large and fought valiant fights at the ends of twisting lines, there have been anglers from the Great Lakes are who have caught the bull trout we have today that say: Now we know why you are doing what you are doing. These bull trout are amazing to catch.
Time has brought changes to the system, some good and some bad. Dams were built, non-native species were introduced, some flourished and then disappeared and some were here to stay, but the fishery of Flathead Lake was soon no longer a native Montana trout fishery.
The non-native lake trout had taken control and are now the dominant fish. The Mack Days events are used to reduce the numbers of the non-native lake trout in the lake.
There will be no fish fry or awards celebration again this year on the last day of this event, due to Covid. Drawings will be done electronically on Monday by staff.
Drawings begin at $50 and go to $2,000. Come out and join us for the last week to get some entries in before the end of the event.
