Flathead, Glacier spikers still alive at state tourney

BOZEMAN — Flathead and Glacier started off the first day of the All-Class State volleyball tournament with losses Thursday, but each has a chance to play its way back to the podium.

In Class AA action, Flathead lost to Bozeman in four sets, 25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20. Savanna Sterck and Alliyah Stevens led the Bravettes with nine kills as did Kennedy Moore’s 22 assists and 13 digs. Jen Lynch led the Hawks with 11 kills, 11 digs and five aces.

Bozeman fell to unbeaten C.M. Russell in the quarterfinal, where it awaits the winner of a consolation round game.

The Bravettes play again today in consolation, a noon game against Butte, who lost to CMR.

Billings West got the best of Glacier in four sets, 25-14, 21-25, 25-7, 25-18, though the Wolfpack’s Sidney Gulick got 14 kills, three blocks and a service ace.

Two wins today could give Glacier and Flathead a shot at third or fourth place.

The Wolfpack takes on Missoula Sentinel at 10 a.m. today in consolation. Sentinel lost to Billings Senior in the first round.

CMR and West advanced to the unbeaten semifinals today at 6 p.m.

In Class A, Polson beat Corvallis Thursday night to advance to semis, where the Pirates will play Havre in a 6 p.m. game. The Pirates also swept Miles City Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Havre defeated Ronan and knocked off defending champion Billings Central en route to the podium.

Class B Townsend and Huntley Project will be semifinal opponents. That game gets going at 6 p.m. today.

Making its tournament debut was Class C’s Froid-Medicine Lake combined program, which beat Bridger earlier Thursday but fell to Manhattan Christian in a quarterfinal game. Manhattan Christian and Plentywood face off today at 6 p.m.

All games are held at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman. The state tournament concludes Saturday.
