Glacier Symphony kicks off its 39th season with music from the 19th to 21st centuries

| October 21, 2021 12:00 AM

The Glacier Symphony brings excellence in classical music to the Flathead Valley with an initial MasterWorks concert titled “Ascension” Oct. 30 and 31.

The opening 21st century composition celebrates the 25th anniversary of Maestro John Zoltek as music director and conductor of the Glacier Symphony. The orchestra will perform his symphonic poem “Processional,” one of many Zoltek pieces to be featured in this 39th season.

In a nod to the 20th century, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik joins the Glacier Symphony Orchestra for a performance of the violin masterpiece “Violin Concerto in A Minor” by Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, a rare opportunity for audiences to experience this tour de force work live in the hands of a consummate artist. Hailed for his dazzling command of the violin, Kutik has become a sought-after artist on the concert stage worldwide. Popular with Northwest Montana audiences, Kutik has appeared twice with the Glacier Symphony during past seasons of Festival Amadeus.

The 19th century offering on the program is Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D Major.” Often referred to as the composer’s “Pastoral Symphony,” it is a delightful and popular work, singular in its “lighthearted” mood among Brahms’ symphonic repertoire.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, in Kalispell at the Flathead High School Performance Hall.

Current Covid-19 guidelines will be observed. All patrons are highly encouraged to wear a mask in all areas of the concert venue. Staff and volunteers will be masked. A limited supply of masks will be available.
