WHITEFISH — The Whitefish track team finally got its season started Thursday in a meet with Columbia Falls that was put together earlier in the week.

Columbia Falls’ boys ruled the day with wins in the sprints, 300 meter hurdles and the javelin to top Whitefish 86-59. Columbia Falls had one meet prior to Thursday, the Hamilton Invite on April 9.

Columbia Falls sprinters Jace Duval, Adler Waters and Findley Sundberg ran to the top three spots in the 100-meter dash. Sundberg led another 1-2-3 Wildcats finish in the 200, and Malaki Simpson made it a third time with his win in the 400.

Whitefish’s Bodie Smith has the best time in Class A in the 110 hurdles with his time of 15.95 seconds and his long jump distance — 20-3 — is eighth in the state. His time is already below the state qualifying standard of 16.10.

Talon Holmquist of Columbia Falls won the shot put with a state-best throw of 51-08, and his 134-00 javelin throw placed him fourth among Class A athletes.

Gabe Menicke, another standout for Whitefish, won the event with a high jump of 5-6.

The Whitefish girls didn’t show any signs of rust and edged the Wildkats 72-62, with a few athletes earning top marks.

Whitefish sprinters Malea Pemberton and Brooke Zetooney won the 100 and 200, respectively, with Pemberton’s time (13.27) in the top four in the state.

Columbia Falls’ Ally Sempf won the 400, and Siri Erickson’s 5:42.24 in the 1600 put her in the top two in the state. Hannah Sempf’s 9-6 leap in the pole vault is tied for first in Class A.

Madison Stutsman won the discus and javelin for Whitefish, and Erin Wilde won in the high jump and long jump.

Both teams travel to Missoula for the MCPS Invite at the MCPS Stadium today. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
