BUTTE — It was a fast track in Butte Friday, and the Glacier boys were the fastest.

With Jake Turner, Sam Ells and Tate Kauffman leading the way, the Wolfpack scored 200 points to win the always deep Harry “Swede” Dahlberg Invitational boys track and field meet.

Gallatin was second at 148 points; defending State AA champion Missoula Sentinel was next at 138.

It’s believed to be the first Dahlberg title for Glacier, which opened its doors in 2007. It’s not necessarily a barometer — the Pack finished seventh at the meet (and Flathead won it) in 2018, the year Glacier won its State AA title. But it is impressive.

Turner won the 400 in a State AA-best 51.20 seconds, while teammate Jackson Hensley won the 200 in 23.42. Hensley, Connor Sullivan and Jeff Lillard gave Glacier a 1-5-6 finish in that event, setting an example of the Wolfpack’s depth.

Missoula Sentinel’s Keagan Crosby won a very tight, very fast 800 in 1:57.56, the best time for all classes; right behind was Glacier’s Sam Ells at 1:57.62.

Ells won the 1,600 in 4:29.38, a few seconds off his season and Class AA best.

Another very tight race was the short relay, which was won in 43.00 by Billings West with Sentinel at 43.11 and Glacier third at 43.13.

The top four in the 300 hurdles now have the four fastest times in AA, starting with Sentinel’s Drew Klumph (40.59) and including Glacier’s Caleb Bernhardt (fourth at 41.17).

Kauffman didn’t match his personal record in the triple jump but his mark of 43 feet, 10 inches was more than a foot better than the athlete in second — which was teammate John Pyron, who got his PR with 42-8 ½. That sits fourth in AA.

Aiden Krause added a fourth in the discus, Kauffman cleared 6-0 to place second in the high jump and Jackson Barney tied for third in the pole vault (12-0) for the Pack.

Flathead scored 16 points and was 13th out of 17 teams. Dylan Zink was the top individual finisher, taking third in the triple jump.

Billings West, a threat to win the AA crown, scored 90 points in what appears to be a shortened day. Taco Dowler ran the fastest 100 in the prelims, 11.29, and then didn’t compete in the final.

Other top marks included a shot put of 51 feet, 11 inches by Helena’s Josh Goleman, which now leads AA; and Carson Steckelberg of Gallatin winning a tight 3,200 race in a state-best 9:47.07.
