Heavy rains calm fire in Glacier Park
Heavy rains helped stifle some of the fires around the area Tuesday as thunderstorms moved through the region.
No new fire activity was observed on the Quartz Fire burning in a remote area of Glacier National Park. Tuesday night’s infrared flight mapped 18 acres of fire growth over the past two days, with the current fire acreage at 1,696 acres. Scattered and isolated heat sources were detected with no areas of intense heat.
35 firefighters were assigned to the fire, which was 0% contained. The fire danger rating in Glacier National Park is currently very high.
Showers and some strong thunderstorms were expected again Wednesday across the region. The National Weather Service had issued a flood watch from noon through the evening.
Heavy rains also moved across the Garceau and Sullivan fires near Hot Springs in Lake County, but numerous lightning strikes also accompanied the storm.
They had burned a combined 6,800 acres as of Tuesday.
The Forest Service is continuing restrictions around the Cannon and Dean Creek fires on the Bob Marshall Wilderness as the two fires had burned 1,384 and 328 acres, respectively, as of Wednesday morning.
