WTC holds auditions for 'Making God Laugh'
The Whitefish Theatre Co. is holding auditions for its first Black Curtain theater production of the 2022-2023 season. Auditions for “Making God Laugh” will be held Sunday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. Arrive early to fill out an audition application, waiver form, and review the script. Enter at the north side of the building.
As Woody Allen famously quipped, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Such is the inspiration for this comedy that follows a family over 30 years’ worth of holidays. Starting in 1980, Ruthie and Bill's grown children — a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former star football player — all return home and discuss their plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. The “empty nest” parents contend with their own changes too, as old family rituals and dubious recipes are trotted out, causing ancient tensions to flare. Over three decades of celebrations — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Easter — the play shows that, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrive at unexpected destinations.
The cast consists of one woman and one man, ages 50s and older, to play the parents; and one woman and two men, ages 20s and older, to play their children. No experience or preparation is necessary to audition. Pages from the script will be provided. If you would like to familiarize yourself with the script, it is available at valley public libraries.
David Ackroyd is the director. As a Black Curtain show, actors will remain on book during performances and there will be minimal costumes and set. There will be approximately nine rehearsals and one technical rehearsal on Sept. 9. There are two performances over one weekend on Sept. 10 and 11.
