Brave Brawlers win Mining City title

BUTTE — For the second year in a row, the Flathead Brave Brawlers won the Mining City Duals, this time defeating Billings West for the title.

Flathead beat Billings West in dominant fashion, 53-18, in the final dual.

On the way to the final, Flathead had to get past three-time Idaho state champions South Fremont, a team that has won over 100 duals in a row.

“We got our lungs blown out this weekend and got an opportunity to wrestle some top competitors this weekend,” Flathead wrestling coach Jeff Thompson said. “The South Fremont duals was one of the most exciting duals that I have ever been part of. Every match was extremely tight and came down to the wire it seemed.”

In the final dual, Flathead got wins from Gannon Wisher (132 pounds), Dane Lake (138), Logan Stansberry (145), Gunnar Thompson (170), Anders Thompson (182), Noah Poe-Hatten (205), and Sawyer Troupe (285).

Aiden Downing at 126 has improved so much from last year,” Thompson said. “He was an absolute hammer this weekend. Gannon Wisher at 132 might be one of the most improved guys in our team. Cade and Sawyer Troupe just keep winning and had a great weekend! Gabe Lake should be in the hunt this year with a dominant top game.”

Downing, Cade Troupe, and Lake each won Outstanding Wrestler awards.

Glacier’s Teegan Vasquez won three matches on Saturday, one by pin (145) and two by major decision(138), as did Josh Melton (126). Kaleb Shine (160) and TJ Gannon (182) each had two wins Saturday.

“Overall a good first week for the Pack,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “We can definitely work on building our conditioning this early part of the season which will help our technique flow a little smoother in the third period. I thought we looked tough on top and we’re able to hand fight well.”
