FHS Theatre stages super-hero adventure

| February 10, 2022 12:00 AM

Flathead High School Theatre brings the magic of the Marvel Universe to life in the family-friendly production of “Mirror of Most Value: A Ms. Marvel Play” Feb. 18 and 19 at 6:27 p.m., with a special matinee performance Feb. 19 at 1 p.m., in the David M. Hashley Theatre.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children, students and senior citizens, available in the FHS main office and Photo Video Plus. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

While trying to keep her identity as Ms. Marvel a secret, teenager Kamala Kamala is trying to balance her life as a typical high school student by day and with her Avenger-adjacent alter ego. Worried about Ms. Marvel’s lack of social media buzz, Kamala creates several fan-fiction posts about her crime fighting adventures. But when building a fandom becomes an obsession, her relationships and schoolwork begin to suffer. To become the superhero she longs to be, Kamala must overcome her own feeling of self-doubt and learn to accept herself … imperfections and all.

The play takes place as Kamala is getting used to her powers … shapeshifting and “embiggening.” In order to fit in she stretches the truth to make herself look better.

“Of course, she learns from her friends, family and the Avengers that heroes do not pretend to be someone else,” director Luke Johnson said. “I think that it sends a strong message that is relevant in teens' lives right now; how to be yourself, especially on social media and what it means to be yourself. This story is full of heroes and not just Dr. Strange, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Ms. Marvel herself. The audience also sees how her teacher and mother are also real heroes.”

With the help of the FHS Technical Theatre classes, this fun one-hour show will take the audience from the real world into a colorful comic book adventure.
