Scouts return to Klondike Derby Winter Camporee
Scout troops engage in a game of tug-of-war at the Northwest District's annual winter camporee near Coram Jan. 21 to 23.
After a two-year hiatus, young men and women from across the Flathead Valley were back to compete in the snow and test their winter skills during the Northwest District's annual Winter Camporee near Coram Jan. 21-23.
Boy Scouts of America youth set out with home-built sleds to test their winter camping mastery, knowledge of Scout craft and strength of spirit. Nearly 100 Scouts and adult leaders from seven Northwest District troops took part in the event.
Saturday featured an outdoor skills competition including first aid, flint and steel fire starting, fire building, pioneering (rope and knot proficiency), and teamwork obstacle problem-solving.
Kalispell Troop 1901 (boys) and Bigfork Troop 1916 (girls) topped the competition.
A patrol sled race and tug-of-war rounded out the day’s events.
Upcoming district events include the annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby at 9 a.m. April 23 at the Kalispell Center Mall. Montana Council is hosting an International Scout Expo in Great Falls during June. All Scouts and their families are welcome.
Scouting units welcome newcomers year-round. Flathead Valley Cub Scout Packs (girls and boys ages 5-10), Scouts BSA troops (girls and boys ages 11-18), and Venture Crew (males and females ages 14-20) of the NW District, Montana Council invite interested youth and their families to join them at upcoming unit meetings:
