Brave Brawlers lead at Rocky Mountain Classic
MISSOULA — Eleven Flathead wrestlers advanced to the semifinals at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic Wrestling tournament Friday at Sentinel High School.
"This team is just really loving to compete and are not just wrestling to win but to push for pins,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “It’s a winning culture right now for Flathead wrestling. When you see all your teammates winning, it pushes you even harder because you want to be part of that circle. Winners win.”
The Brave Brawlers also sit atop the team standings with 176.5 points, 51 more than University High (WA) in second. Glacier is in sixth with 85 points, and Columbia Falls and Ronan are ninth and tenth.
Glacier has two wrestlers in Saturday morning’s semifinals — Kaleb Shine at 138 pounds and Teegan Vasquez at 132, which sets up a possible rematch with Flathead’s Asher Kemppainen, whom Vasquez defeated Thursday.
In the semifinals for Flathead are Davin Naldret (103), Aiden Downing (113), Dane Lake (126), Kemppainen (132), Fin Nadeau (145), Cade Troupe (152), Gabe Lake (160), Anders Thompson (170), Noah Poe-Hatten (182), Chase Youso (205) and Forest Howell (285).
Dane Lake pinned Glacier’s Joshua Melton in the quarterfinals.
Columbia Falls’ only wrestler in the semis is Justin Windauer, who scored a quarterfinal win against Mason Keough of Coeur d’Alene.
Two Libby grapplers advanced to semis — Jace DeShazer (182) and Marley Erickson (120).
Polson’s Riley Knutson (103) was defeated by Cashton Spolar in a 10-8 decision in the quarterfinals.
