Brave Brawlers win Rocky Mountain Classic

MISSOULA — Flathead walked away with another tournament title Saturday after two days of competition at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic, held at Missoula Sentinel High School.

Flathead’s 314 points beat the record set by the 2008 Brave Brawlers (277.5), who were nationally ranked at the time.

Flathead also had several individual champions and a couple of almosts but place all of its 13 wrestlers on the podium.

“We were firing on all cylinders this weekend,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “It’s kind of bitter sweet though – we lost some tough matches in the finals that sting.”

Noah Poe-Hatten was one of Flathead’s champions and one who preserved an unbeaten record with a 1-0 decision over Butte’s Mason Christian in the 182-pound final.

At 160 pounds, Brave Brawler Gabe Lake defeated Helena Capital’s Conner Kovick in a 15-5 major decision.

Davin Naldret (103), Aiden Downing (113), Fin Nadeau (145), Anders Thompson (170), and Chase Youso (205) all suffered defeats in their final matches but contributed to the overall score that helped Flathead win another championship.

“Every single wrestler placed,” Thompson said. That’s pretty special and one of those moments as a coach I will always cherish. We are just super proud of this team and the performance they put in at the Rocky. This is one of the toughest tournaments in Montana so we really wanted to perform well.”

Other placers were Diesel Thompson (120), Dane Lake (126) in fourth, Asher Kemppainen (132) and Cade Troupe (152) in third, and Forest Howell (285) in fifth.

Glacier’s Teegan Vasquez remained unbeaten by winning the 132-pound title by pinning Butte’s Kip Pumnea in 1:47.

Kaleb Shine (138), ended up fourth; Garrett Bosch (113) and Aiden Krause (182) placed seventh, and the Pack was eighth overall.

“Teegan Vasquez continues to impress, he has yet to be challenged this year,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “Kaleb Shine has been really coming on this last couple weeks and am super excited for him in the pair season. Super proud of Bosch and Krause for placing.”

Columbia Falls wrestler Justin Windauer fell in the 138-pound final to Helena Capital’s Carson DesRosier in a 9-3 decision.

Jake DeShazer (182) of Libby ended up fifth.

University High (WA) was second overall and with 221 points, well behind Flathead. Coeur d’Alene was third and Butte placed third.
