Bravettes hold off Capital, now 8-0
Kennedy Moore and Akilah Kubi combined for 24 points, a passel of rebounds and another win for the Flathead Bravettes, who knocked off defending State AA champion Helena Capital 46-44 Saturday at the Flathead gym.
Moore’s 13 points included a free throw with 4 seconds left; when she missed the second teammate Clare Converse snared the offensive rebound to seal the game.
“We gritted another one out,” second-year Bravettes’ coach Sam Tudor said, after his team improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Western AA. “Kennedy had some big rebounds, and so did Akilah. Just to have them be that composed, in that type of a game, was a beautiful thing.”
Capital (4-3 overall, 1-2 in league) came out hot, hitting four 3-pointers. Three came from junior guard Jada Clarkson, who poured in 26 points.
Flathead steadied and pushed into the lead in the second quarter and was up seven late in the fourth.
“They buried a 3-pointer and it was down to the end,” Tudor said.
Moore, a sophomore, scored 10 points in the second half. Kubi had nine points before intermission. Converse added six points and that critical board.
“There’s something about Clare at the end of the game,” Tudor said. “ She wasn’t going to let that one slip away.
“That was a big win for Flathead.”
The Bravettes’ next action is the crosstown game with Glacier Friday, at 6 p.m. at the Flathead gym.
