Tom Sawyer, 46

| January 19, 2022 12:00 AM

Tom Sawyer passed away suddenly on Jan. 7, 2022.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1975, in Portland, Maine. Tom was an only child of Tom Sawyer of Portland, Maine, and Helen Sawyer of Hackettstown, New Jersey. Tom attended and graduated from Biddeford High School where he played basketball all four years. When he wasn’t playing for the school you could find him at Clifford Park or Emery School playing pick-up games. After high school, Tom attended a program at SMTC, and found his passion for cooking. He began his career at Nonantum Resort in Maine, and worked his way up from entry level to executive chef. A highlight of his career included preparing meals for former President George W. Bush Sr.

Tom was an outdoors and travel enthusiast who enjoyed every season, and these passions helped him make his way to Montana. He found joy in fly fishing while working at Spotted Bear Ranch and enjoyed skiing in the winter. Tom made friends wherever he went. Being a people person and having a love of music, Tom even tried his hand at being a DJ (T-Sizzle). He shared his enthusiasm for sports with everyone and ensured folks knew he was a fan of the New England Patriots, and was a die-hard Boston Celtics fan. Tom’s dog, Roux, was his constant companion and was loved no matter what mayhem she caused.

Tom was able to create a sense of family wherever he found himself. His last position, as executive chef at Blaine Creek Grill, in Kalispell, was no exception. Not only did he create amazing food, he fostered a sense of community and loving atmosphere for the owners, staff and patrons he worked with. His pride in his craft was felt by all that knew him. He leaves a legacy of kindness and love that will be remembered fondly by all he interacted with.

Tom was predeceased by his father and mother. We know you are dancing with your mom in heaven, and it gives us a bittersweet solace.

Tom is survived by his uncle Robert Childs and aunt Sheila Estes, and many many friends.

Arrangements will be made through Buffalo Hill Funeral Home, and will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice in Tom’s name.
