C-Falls MatCats take fifth at A Duals

LEWISTOWN — Columbia Falls finished fifth at the 19-team Class A Duals that concluded Saturday at Fergus High School, beating Ronan in a shortened dual by an 18-12 score to leave the Chiefs in sixth.

Double forfeits at six weights left the MatCats and Chiefs six matches to decide a winner: Columbia Falls had pins from Tyler Gilfry (120 pounds), Bryan Osborne (152) and Rowdy Crump (170) while Ronan got one pin from Ridge Cote (113) and decisions from Koy McAllister (126) and James Kenelty (132).

The MatCats’ Justin Windauer had three pins, a decision and a forfeit win at 138 pounds in their other duals; also having an excellent weekend were Josiah Kilman (5-0 with four pins at 132) and Winslow Peter (5-0, three pins at 113). Brandon Role went 4-1 with two pins at 170, and Logan Speed was 4-1 with two forfeits and two falls at heavyweight.

Three teams each out of four pools advanced to make the 12-team championship bracket: Columbia Falls beat Glendive 55-15 in the first round there, then lost to eventual champion Frenchtown 45-24 and then fell to Havre 39-33 to fall into the fifth-place match.

Ronan beat Hardin 41-22, then fell to Havre 39-30, beat Miles City 42-33 and then fell to Laurel, 48-18. Havre ended up beating Laurel 49-24 for third.

Libby went 1-2 during pool play, with the win coming 57-18 over Stevensville.

Frenchtown’s win is more impressive in that Sidney is the 4-time defending State A champion.
