Hiker dies in Glacier National Park trying to ascend Rising Wolf Mountain
Glacier National Park saw its third hiking fatality in two days Monday as a 79-year-old Florida man fell while attempting to ascend a steep off-trail slope with a group of friends.
The incident occurred several hundred feet above the Two Medicine Campground on Rising Wolf Mountain.
The friends descended to his location, yelled for help and called 911. Glacier County Dispatch then diverted the call to Glacier National Park.
NPS staff mobilized after campers heard shouts for help. Two Bear Air diverted from a separate incident and transported the unconscious patient to Two Medicine Ranger Station where ALERT was standing by for care. The man was declared deceased by ALERT personnel.
At 9,513 feet, Rising Wolf is the tallest peak in the Two Medicine area.
Park staff thanked the Glacier County Sheriff's Office, ALERT and Two Bear Air for their support and expressed their deepest condolences to the family. Officials asked that the public respect the family’s privacy.
