| June 19, 2022 12:00 AM

Morey Grove passed away Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Brendan House in Kalispell.

Morey was born to David and Margaret Grove on Nov. 4, 1946, in Kalispell. He grew up in Somers where his dad worked at the Somers Lumber Company. His father died in 1952 leaving Margaret Grove to care soley for him and his older sister, Nyla. Morey attended Somers Grade School and graduated from Flathead High School in 1964.

He worked for the Montana National Guard in Kalispell as a mechanic for 21 years. He tracked M60 Tank and Tank Recovery of M88, along with supplying ammunition and food to troops as needed. He later owned and operated the Novice Windshield Repair for Lake and Flathead County. In his later years he worked for the Somers Water and Mosquito District. He loved his community and its history. You could always count on him talking at length during the Somers Reunions.

Morey prided himself in taking care of his mother and his sister who was a single mother with four children. He spent every holiday in Missoula, bringing puzzles and presents to his nieces and nephew In 1974 he took them to the World’s Fair in Spokane. He was a giving person; a friend to many and always helping anyone in need.

In his retirement years, he followed his love of history and began tracing his family’s genealogy, it was a true passion. He was proud of his Scottish heritage, being a descendent of the Mayflower, a drummer in the Revolutionary War, and a private in the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. He loved helping others trace their lineage.

Morey was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nyla Sterner and great nephew, Stuart Willard in 2020, niece Shelly Willard in 2019, and niece Tina Smith in 1983.

He is survived by his nephew Shane (April) Sterner of Missoula, and his niece Claudi Jo (Tim) Lund of Hamilton. He leaves numerous great-nieces and -nephews (who will miss their Pesky Ol’ Uncle Morey as he called himself);, and four cousins, Kaylene Larson, Robin Larson, Janet Luczak, and Marsha Jenkins.

The family is planning a private service on “the steep hill” at the family Campbell Homestead in the Blackleaf Canyon near Bynum, Montana, at a later date.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff and nurses that took care of him over the past year at Brendan House.
