NAIA men: Carroll, Tech win openers
HELENA — Shamrock Campbell hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead Carroll College over Mount Vernon Nazarene in a first-round NAIA Men’s Tournament game Friday at Carroll’s gym.
Campbell also had seven assists; Jonny Hillman added 10 points, and Brendan Temple checked in with nine points and eight rebounds for the Saints (29-4).
Down 35-27 at halftime, Nazarene closed to 56-54 on a 3-pointer by Kade Ruegsegger with 9:05 left. Carroll scored the next 16 points, starting with two Campbell threes and ending with an Andrew Cook dunk to lead 62-56 with 31 seconds remaining.
Ruegsegger led Nazarene with 17 points. The Saints ruled the boards 37-26, with Lowell Chan and Murat Guzelocak snaring eight each.
Carroll plays the Jamestown (N.D.) Jimmies at 7 p.m. Saturday for a berth into the Sweet 16.
Montana Tech 71, Mid-American Christian 67
WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Caleb Bellach scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Sindau Diallo had 14 points and Drew Huse chipped in 10 for the Orediggers (27-6).
Michael Ure’s 3-pointer had Tech up 51-42 with 10:53 left, but Mid-American (20-13) jumped ahead 62-60 on a 3-pointer by Caleb Riggs at the 3:40 mark.
Huse’s three with 2:04 left put Tech in front for good, 64-62, and a Diallo jumper and two Derrius Collins free throws made it 69-64 with 12 seconds remaining.
Kendall Scott had 11 points and 11 rebounds in a losing cause. Isaiah Hammonds scored a team-high 16 points.
Montana Tech will play SAGU Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.
