NAIA Women: Carroll, Rocky pick up wins
NEW ORLEANS — Dani Wagner scored 22 points, Kamden Hilborn added 10 and Carroll College won its NAIA Women’s Tournament opener Friday, 69-50 over Lindsey Wilson.
Wagner made 6 of 9 3-pointers for the Saints (25-7), and was 8-for-11 from the field overall. Hamden had seven assists and two steals; Christine Denny added eight points and nine rebounds. Jamie Pickens checked in with six points.
The Saints take on Loyola (La.) University at 2 p.m. Saturday for a shot at the NAIA’s Sweet 16.
Rocky 63, Reinhardt (Ga.) 44
BILLINGS — Kloie Thatcher poured in 23 points and N’Dea Flye added 17 as Rocky Mountain College made short work of Reinhardt.
Both players hit three 3-pointes, and Thatcher was 12-for-13 at the line for the Bears (27-4). Flye hit all her threes in the first quarter — converting one into a four-paint play — and scored 14 points as Rocky sprinted out to a 24-9 lead.
Shauna Bribiescas added 12 points for the Bears, who play Dakota (S.D.) State at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.
Abi Haynes had 12 points and six boards for Reinhardt (20-14).
Talladega (Ala.) 73, Providence 70
ALEXANDRIA, La. — Emilee Maldonado had 23 points and Parker Esary 20 for Providence, which led 23-15 early in the second quarter but trailed big in the fourth.
Trailing 70-57, the Argonauts (25-7) cut the gap to 72-70 on Parker’s layup with 45 seconds left, got the ball back on a steal by Maldonado but missed two game-tying shots in the final eight seconds.
