Kevin Gerard Maskill, 27

| March 27, 2022 12:00 AM

Kevin Gerard Maskill, 27, passed away peacefully in his sleep due to a pre-existing cardiac condition on March 17, 2022, at his home in Kalispell. He was the son of Mark Maskill (Kalispell) and Donna Hakola (Baraga, Michigan).

Kevin was born on Oct. 25, 1994, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He lived in several Western states, then attended school and graduated from Baraga High School (BHS) in 2013. While at BHS, he was the Baraga Viking Mascot. His classmates described him as having more Viking spirit, love, and loyalty than anyone.

He attended college at Flathead Valley Community College (Kalispell), transferred to Northern Michigan University (Marquette, Michigan), and then to Rochester University (RU; Rochester, Michigan). While at RU, Kevin was the manager of the RU Warriors Wrestling Team. He was proud to be part of the team and embodied the Warriors spirit.

Kevin was larger than life and had a heart of gold. He loved his family and friends deeply and reminded us of that often. He was the life of the party. His quirky sense of humor could bring laughter and a smile to anyone he encountered. He brightened our times together, no matter the occasion. You could count on Kevin to have a witty remark, an unforgettable saying, make a joke, suddenly bust a move, and to give you a huge hug. These qualities brought us all a tremendous amount of joy. He wanted everyone to be well in the world and know that he was always there for you. He was our sunshine and our dance of life, he was “Our Kevin, the ‘Budman.’”

Kevin loved his dog Sparty, watching professional and college sports — especially the Michigan State Spartans — coffee, catching turtles at the family lake, playing basketball in the yard where he proudly called himself “The Closer,” golf outings, making music playlists, listening to podcasts, and playing Xbox. He loved sitting by a campfire, checking and texting friends at all hours of the night, sleeping outside on the porch in the summer counting shooting stars, spending time with his extended family, hunting with his dad, spending time and snuggling with his sister, and late night calls with his mom.

He is survived by his parents, his sister Paige, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Hannah; his grandparents, Don and Peggy Maskill of Rochester, Michigan, and Fred and Marty Hollon of Baraga, Michigan; and his stepdad Dale Hakola, also of Baraga.

A memorial service for Kevin will be held at Rochester University in Michigan on Memorial Day. Celebrations of life are also planned for Kalispell and Baraga at a later date.

Donations in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Flathead County Animal Shelter, Kalispell, in Kevin’s name.
