HAMILTON — Hailey Ells and Erin Wilde provided individual victories for the Whitefish girls Friday, at the Western A Divisional track and field meet at Broncs Stadium.

The Columbia Falls Wildkats saw it and said, “Hold our windbreakers.”

With Siri Erickson winning the 1,600, Hannah Sempf taking the pole vault and the short relay finishing second, Columbia Falls built a narrow 45-42 lead over Whitefish in the girls team race, after six events.

The Bulldogs figured to score a bunch Saturday — Ells, who won the 400 in a career best 58.79 seconds Friday, and Brooke Zetooney ran the two fastest 100 times Friday — but the Kats aren’t going anywhere.

It was a fast track, with most of the girls in the timed events setting personal or season bests. That includes Dillon standout Ainsley Shipman, who clocked 14.00 in the 100-meter hurdles according to athletic.net. The existing all-class Montana record is 14.11, by Morgan Sulser in 2013.

Northwest A boys teams didn’t fare as well, with Hamilton (57.5 points) and Dillon (55) grabbing more than half the available points on Friday.

Whitefish sits fifth with 16 points, thanks mostly to Bodie Smith’s personal-record winning long jump of 21 feet, 4.75 inches.

Columbia Falls’ 14 points including a winning short relay: Adler Waters, Malaki Simpson, Adam Schrader and Jace Duval clocked 43.91.
