Fresh air: Glacier's fall colors attract local artists group
Fall colors are nearing at their prime along U.S. 2 east of West Glacier. When this happens, chances are one will find a group of artists with easels at the ready.
Last week, artists with Pleinair Painters of the Flathead were nestled on a rocky sandbar at the Cascadilla fishing access along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Every Tuesday, the local artists group comes together to transfer the beauty of Montana onto canvas.
Sandra Marker, with Pleinair Painters, said that the locations they select tend to be short walks, with easy access around the Flathead valley. The Cascadilla site is the group’s most popular painting location.
Marker said the artist group started about 15 years ago, with a core membership of six people. The group now has over 30 members, including anyone from beginners to professionals.
The group’s name comes from the “en plein aire” movement that began in France in the late 1700s, and means “painting in the fresh air.”
The newest member, Megan Heill, was excited to be at her first event with the group as an experienced artist. Felicia Wassum, meanwhile, is new to the medium, with just four months behind the easel.
“We have developed a camaraderie and share new locations to paint and tips about the equipment and techniques we use,” Marker commented.
The Pleinair Painters will be displaying and selling their work Nov. 16 through Dec. 30 at the Fishers Greenhouse in Columbia Falls. People who are interested in joining the group can email alaris44@yahoo.com. All skill levels are welcomed. Each week the locations and times are sent out by email.
