Whitefish galleries focus on First Thursday
CAWDREY GALLERY
Cawdrey Gallery in Whitefish is featuring local emerging artists Madison Apple and Morgan Cawdrey for the First Thursday, Sept. 1, Whitefish Gallery Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Apple is well known as a graphic designer native to the Flathead Valley, a volunteer art teacher at KALICO Community Art Center, muralist and painter of Glacier National Park landscapes. Cawdrey went to Bigfork High School, studied Chinese language and art at Dartmouth College and has lived in Whitefish since 2012, where he paints the Montana scenes and wildlife that inspire him.
Both Apple and Cawdrey are also employed by Cawdrey Gallery. Apple is a sales associate and graphic designer and Cawdrey is assistant gallery manager.
“I grew up most comfortable painting with water media on silk or paper, taught by my mom, artist and gallery owner Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey,” Morgan Cawdrey said. “While dye on silk still is the best choice for many subjects, recently I have been having a lot of fun painting old barns and local landscapes in oil, often ‘en plein air’ or ‘in the open air,’ using primarily a palette knife.”
Apple has been making art his whole life, pulling inspiration from the Montana backcountry.
“I think about capturing the raw emotion of mother nature through storms, cloud formations, and dramatic light and shadow. To me, it shows the less forgiving side of the Rocky Mountains and I think that’s amazing,” Apple said.
Each artist will be showing eight to 10 pieces, including recently completed works, as well as demonstrating. Light refreshments will be served.
During a special event Thursday, Sept. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cawdrey Gallery, artists Trey McCarley and Bonnie Zahn Griffith will be sharing new work and talking about their process as landscape painters. Craft cocktails and autumn grazing boards will be served. RSVP to Cawdrey Gallery to attend, as seating is limited.
UNDERSCORE ART & JEWELRY
Shawna Moore is a contemporary American painter known for her subtle explorations of color. Her paintings are the product of an ongoing investigation into the nature of abstraction and the medium of painting itself.
Moore’s work, featured at Underscore Art in her “Watermark” exhibit, gives viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves into water and Moore's sophisticated collision of representation and abstraction.
Meet the artist at the exhibit opening from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 1. Dan Dubuque will provide live music.
