Featuring the work of local artist Lael Gray the “Heart of Art” exhibition opens this month at Phillips Studio & Gallery.

Gray is a “modern impressionist’s view of familiar scenes.”

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 7 at the gallery located in Kalispell Center Mall. Gray will talk about her work at 5:30 p.m.

Gray, who majored in design and minored in art at the University of California at Davis, expressed an interest in art at a young age through the encouragement of her mother who taught after-school art classes and kept their home stocked art supplies.

She went on to pursue multiple interests including teaching violin and owning businesses. In 1976, she opened a T-shirt shop and created her own silkscreened printed designs for events such as Huckleberry Days and the Whitefish Winter Carnival. She went on to own Northwind T-shirt shop on Central Avenue in Whitefish for 34 years before selling it and concentrating on pursuing her passion for fine art, studying with Joe Abbrescia from Kalispell and Kevin MacPherson at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and the Tucson Art Academy.

She enjoys using oils, oil pastels, acrylics, watercolors and doing silk painting.

The Heart of Art exhibit will be on display through April 29.
