Award-winning social observer and “Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau will be in Kalispell April 25 as part of the Wachholz College Center’s Speaker Series.

Launched in 1970, Trudeau rose to fame with “Doonesbury” and became the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1989, 2004 and 2005.

“Doonesbury” features an extensive cast of characters including ones loosely based on public figures. The comic strip currently appears in nearly 1,200 daily and Sunday newspaper clients in the U.S. and abroad.

Since the ’90s he has also written extensively about military issues, receiving recognition for his work, and traveled with the USO to visit troops in Afghanistan. In 2006, he launched “The Sandbox,” an online military blog, which featured the writings of deployed soldiers, veterans, spouses and caregivers, according to simonandschuster.com.

His newest project is “Dbury@50: The Complete Digital Doonesbury,” a limited-edition book, poster, and USB set that takes readers through the comic strips’ archive.

Trudeau’s work has been collected in 62 hardcover, trade paperback and mass-market editions, which have cumulatively sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Single ticket prices range for each speaker from $59 up to $70.

The Wachholz College Center is located on the campus of Flathead Valley Community College.
