Whitefish resident Tony Hernandez marks the release of his first book, “Always Turn Down the First Offer” a memoir of his 36-year sportscasting career, with a reading and signing Saturday.

“Always Turn Down the First Offer” chronicles Hernandez’s experiences as a sportscaster through the late 1960s and early 2000s. He provides insight into working in small TV and Radio markets to major players such as New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and, for the last 26 years of his career, Los Angeles. The book also details his up-close interactions with some of America’s greatest athletes, teams, coaches and broadcasters.

Hernandez holds nothing back as he describes the highs and lows and the politics involved in the business of broadcasting.

“For those who may be interested in entering the profession themselves, there are lessons to be learned here,” he said.

Hernandez continues to be involved with sports, starting his second season as the public address announcer for the Glacier Range Riders, the valley's professional baseball team.

Since moving to Whitefish in 2005, Hernandez has been involved with the Whitefish Theatre Company, which is hosting the reading and book signing. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the O'Shaughnessy Center, 1 Central Ave. in Whitefish. Admission is free and audience members are welcome to ask questions.
