Ronan Maidens go 1-2 in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A cold start led to a 16-point deficit after one quarter for the Ronan Maidens Thursday, and they fell to West Anchorage 51-41 in their final game at the Alaska Airlines Classic.

Ariana Zepeda scored nine points and Lauryn Buhr had seven points and 11 rebounds for Ronan, which fought back after falling behind 19-3. Including Wednesday’s 62-43 loss to powerful Tikigaq, the Maidens went 1-2 in Alaska and are 3-8 on the season.

Olvia Heiner hit two 3-pointers and added eight points; Ronan struggled from the field and the line (13 for 28) while the host Eagles, who play in Alaska’s highest classification (4A), hit 16 of 22 free throws.

West Anchorage’s Jordan Zackery led all scorers with 20 points.

Jennifer Nash had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals, helping the Tikigaq Harpoonerettes down Ronan Wednesday.

Lauryn Buhr scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Maidens. Leina Ulutoa and Margaret Cordova had five steals each, and Ulutoa had five rebounds to go with seven points.

Nash led Tikigaq to the Alaska State 2A title in 2022.

On Tuesday Ronan opened the tournament with a 44-40 win over 2A Metlakatla. The Maidens earned a trip to the event, along with the Ronan Chiefs, through the "Alaskan Nets High School Movie Night" sweepstakes.
