Harold Claude Herington, 90, passed away on May 25, 2023, at his home in Kalispell.

Claude as he was more commonly known, was born in Rice County, Minnesota, on April 12, 1933. The only child of Harold E. (3/13/1905 - 06/1987) and Helen Catherine (Pittman) (11/04/1901 - 01/18/1978) Herington.

In his youth he spent summers with his grandpa, Robert Pittman; aunt, Mayme; and uncle, Henry; on the family farm in Kilkenny, Minnesota.

The son of a railroad man, he moved frequently and so attended schools in Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. After high school he attended the Minnesota School of Business.

On completing his classes he secured a job with Cargill, Inc. and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he became the Regional Traffic Manager.

He was the recipient of several awards including “Person of the Year in Transportation” by the Transportation Club of Portland and an award for outstanding and devoted service from the Kalispell Kiwanis Club.

On March 16, 1974, Claude was united in marriage to Dorothy Alma Nordtome (8/28/1925 - 03/09/2017) and in retirement they settled in Kalispell.

He was preceded in death by his wife and both parents.

He is survived by two maternal cousins and their families.

He grew up during the Great Depression and WWll era. His character was formed from those days of neighbor helping neighbor, and anyone in need. He had a strong love of country and a moral conviction about civility and firm but fair justice for those in leadership.

He had an amazing memory of dates and events. He was a wonderful friend and neighbor, even to cats, feeding all that would stray by.

Fitness was a priority as he and Dorothy would walk 5-7 miles daily enjoying the many hiking trails of Glacier National Park.

A private burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Columbia Mortuary.
