U.S. 93 road work north of Kalispell begins June 5
Road construction work is set to begin Monday, June 5 on a stretch of U.S. 93 north of Kalispell.
The Montana Department of Transportation and Knife River are repaving approximately 2 miles of the five-lane highway north of Reserve Drive in Kalispell. Construction is expected to begin the week of June 5 and be completed this fall.
Once construction begins, motorists can expect for north and southbound lanes to travel on the same side of the highway, reduced speed limits, width restrictions. Traffic may be directed by flaggers, pilot cars and traffic signals.
Construction is anticipated to begin with night work on the section of roadway between Reserve Drive and Stillwater River bridge. At this location, work will take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Work north of the Stillwater River bridge will take place during daytime hours, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and is anticipated to begin the week of June 12. Improvements to this stretch of road will include a resurfaced roadway, chip seal, fog seal, new pavement markings and signage, upgraded guardrail, and installing shoulder rumble strips and updated barrier ends on the Stillwater River bridge.
“This is a cost-effective preventative maintenance project that will improve the driving surface and help with maintaining the highway,” said John Schmidt, the state’s Missoula district construction engineer. “This roadway has received minor maintenance in the past 15 years, but this project marks the most significant rehabilitation.”

THE MONTANA Department of Transportation (MDT) and LHC Inc. are rehabilitating seven roadways in the Kalispell urban area. Five of the project locations will be resurfaced prior to being sealed and covered. Two of the locations will only be chip sealed. All project locations will receive new pavement markings.
The project areas are located on East Reserve Drive, West Evergreen Drive, Airport Road, Conrad Drive, Woodland Park Drive, Whitefish Stage Road and Woodland Avenue.
Work is anticipated to begin the week of June 5 on the Airport Road project area. Construction will begin on the other project areas later this summer. This project is anticipated to be completed in a single construction season.
“This project was requested by the city of Kalispell, who had resurfaced Whitefish Stage Road and Woodland Avenue recently,” said John Schmidt, construction engineer with the state agency. “This project will improve the driving surface of the other five roads and will extend the service life of all seven roads.”
Traffic control will vary at each project location. However, motorists can expect reduced speed limits, traffic reduced to a single lane at times, and width restrictions in place at each location. The public is encouraged to visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information.
