Sentinel tabs Beighle as coach

Sam Beighle, a standout basketball player at Missoula Sentinel who spent the last four seasons as an assistant, has been named the next head coach for the Spartans boys basketball team.

The selection, which is pending MCPS Board approval, was announced Wednesday. He replaces Jason Maki, who stepped down after three seasons on May 4.

The Spartans went 24-33 under Maki, winning a total of seven games the last two seasons. His first team went 17-3 and earned the program’s first State AA trophy (third) since 2008.

23.3 points and 7.1 rebounds for Sentinel.

Oakland taking over in Polson

Carson Oakland, whose two seasons at Mission included a landmark run to the 8-man football title game last fall, is the new head football coach in Polson.

Oakland confirmed the move on Twitter on May 25. He replaced Kaden Glinsmann, who left to be head coach at Emporia (Kan.) High. Glinsmann went 26-12 in four seasons at Polson; the Pirates reached the State A semifinals the last two seasons.

Oakland took over in Mission in 2021 for Tyler Murray, who left to take over Class A East Helena’s fledgling football program. Mission went 7-3 and then 13-1 under Oakland, and reached the 8-man championship for the first time since 1948, losing to Belt.
