AA Lakers start hot, cool off against Senators

The Kalispell AA Lakers’ bats were off, then on, then off again.

Max Holden homered and Carter Schlegel threw five 1-3 sharp innings as the Lakers beat the Helena Senators 10-1 in the first game of a Legion doubleheader Wednesday at Griffin Field.

But in the second game two Helena pitchers combined to shut out the Lakers on six hits in a 5-0 win. That combined with a 12-0 win on Tuesday gave the Senators the edge in the 3-game series.

Schlegel allowed three hits, one walk and one earned run in his five-plus innings on the mound. He fanned one.

Andre Cephers’ 2-run single put the Lakers up 3-0 in the first — an inning that saw three hit by pitches. Holden’s home run, a 2-run shot, came in the fifth inning and made it 10-1 in the fifth inning.

Holden and Adam Nikunen each had two hits and three runs scored.

William Lyng threw six innings, allowing six hits and no walks. He struck out four, and reliever Dylan Willcut fanned two in the seventh.

Brayden Beatty’s 3-run double to cap the third inning was the big hit for Helena (24-7 overall, 6-3 in conference games).

Oscar Kallis had a double for the Lakers (23-7, 5-4), and he and Colin Leonard each threw two innings of scoreless relief.

Helena pitcher Lance Bratlien allowed just two hits — to Joey Thatcher and Colin Leonard — and three walks white striking out six in a 5-inning shutout.

Aaron Fuzesy doubled, tripled and scored three times for the Senators, who scored six times in the fourth inning and ended the game early under the mercy rule..
