Homeschool Theatre Club presents classic musical tale

| March 30, 2023 12:00 AM

Telling the story of a magical adventure, the Homeschool Theatre Club presents “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” this weekend.

Shows are Friday, March 31 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 at 6 p.m. at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.

Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming's children's book, the musical fantasy tells the story of widowed inventor Caractacus Potts as he raises his two young children.

Potts sets about restoring an old race car from a scrap heap with the help of his children and they soon discover it has magical properties including the ability to take flight. Trouble occurs when the evil Baron Bomburst desires the magic car for himself.

The show is filled with amazing stage spectacles and unforgettable songs.

The Homeschool Theatre Club is an educational club that seeks to educate the home-educated students of the Flathead Valley in the fine arts. All performances are donation admittance only.

“Our goals include assisting as many young people that we can accommodate, to be a vital part of producing quality theater performances,” said Martha Artyomenko with the club. “We seek by acquiring members in our club to encourage participation in every part of the process. Writing, props, costumes, stagehands, music and other pieces of the production are all worked into the part of their education.”

There are about 28 families and nearly 75 students participating in the musical. Activities include the writing of the production script, auditions, rehearsals, fundraising and putting on the production.

“The students are instructed in professional-level theater, with little to no experience prior,” Artyomenko said. “They often are spending 15-20 plus hours weekly during the theater season to prepare for the show.”
