Wolfpack, Bravettes win rainy Roe titles

The 44th Archie Roe Invitational track and field meet was going to get run, rain or shine. You know which thing happened Saturday.

Hundreds of competitors crowded the rain-soaked track at Legends Stadium, and if the elements were putting up a fight there were still some hot races.

Glacier’s boys and Flathead’s girls rolled to the varsity team titles, for the record. But the 800 boys featured a nice cross-section of talent. Flathead sophomore Kasen Kaster took over the lead from Missoula Hellgate’s Finneas Colescott late on the first lap and held on, winning in 2 minutes, 19.15 seconds.

That’s just .02 off his personal record. “In the rain, which is pretty cool,” he said.

The race also featured Hellgate’s Ridley Key, Whitefish senior Nate Ingelfinger and Bigfork junior Jack Jensen going 2-3-4. All three did PR: Ingelfinger met the qualifying standard and his time of 2:00.88 sits fourth in Class A; Jensen pushed his 800 time down to 2:01.70, which qualifies for the State B meet and sits second in his classification.

Sentinel and Helena have some serious 800 runners and weren’t here Saturday, but an Archie Roe title is no easy feat. Colescott, whom Kastner was seeing for the first time since last fall, won the 3,200 to start the meet, by the way.

“He’s pretty far ahead of me in cross country,” Kastner said. “He was ahead of me on the first lap. I was going to stay with him; coming in, my time was (better) so I had the inside line. He normally takes off pretty hard.”

Flathead got a long and triple jump sweep from Brody Thornsberry and won the long relay, but Glacier was very strong on this day.

Jeff Lillard swept the 200 and 400 and Ethan Anderson scored a hurdles sweep for the Wolfpack, which piled up 154 points to 133 for Hellgate and 109 for Flathead.

Kash Goicoechea won the 100 in 11.22 seconds — Columbia Falls’ Malaki Simpson had a nice lean at the end and clocked 11.23 — and Aiden Krause unleashed a winning discus throw of 162 feet, 11 inches, which makes him the third AA thrower to cross the 160-foot mark.

Ben Winters set a PR in the shot put while finishing second at 48-9.

On a cold day, Goicoechea stepped out of the 400 relay and Kole Johnson stepped in. The Pack won that in 43.03. That race and Lillard’s winning 400 time of 49.98 were about the closest anyone came to a meet record.

Thornsberry had the best triple jump of his career for Flathead, marking 43-4.25 and winning the event. He sits third in AA.

Plains’ Mason Elliott sits fifth in B after his PR of 42.98 in the 300 hurdles that Anderson won in 41 seconds flat,

The Flathead Bravettes won the girls title with 143 points. Hellgate had 107, Whitefish 71, Columbia Falls 53.5 and Glacier 41.

There were the usual suspects — Kennedy Moore won the high jump, Tali Miller took the javelin, and Alivia Rinehart and Bristol Lenz went 1-2 in the 100 hurdles — and some serious depth. As in Afton Wride, Mia Stephan and Alice Dolezal finishing 2-4-5 in the triple jump.

Whitefish, the defending State A champion, saw Brooke Zetooney win a quick 100 meters in 12.62 seconds; Columbia Falls’ Ally Sempf, who would later win the 200, was second at 12.74.

Zetooney, a junior, also anchored the Bulldogs’ short relay that won in 50.76.

“Not our best, but not terrible considering the bad handoffs we had,” Zetooney said. “Terrible.

“I was, I think, third (when she got the baton). With maybe a 15, 20-meter gap ahead of us.”

She was able to catch Flathead’s Akilah Kubi; the Bravettes, who were also second in the long relay, came across in 50.92.

Whitefish still has potential to score big at the State A meet, and will have to with the way Corvallis has been running.

“They’re a pretty solid team,” Zetooney said. “It’s definitely going to be a close competition but I think we can do it.”

It helps that Hailey Ells keeps bumping down her 100-meter hurdles times (16.43 Saturday, fifth in A); Ells also held off the Flathead tandem of Zoey Bortz and Rinehart to win the 300s.

Also encouraging for Whitefish was junior Maeve Ingelfinger’s second–place finish in the 800; only one Class A runner has been faster than her time of 2:21.88 this season.

Besides Sempf, Columbia Falls had a strong performance from Siri Erickson, who was third in the 1,600 while running the second-fastest time in Class A (5:22.27). The Wildkats also saw Emma McAllister PR in the triple jump.

Glacier’s Kai Johnson won a duel with Bigfork’s Scout Nadeau in the shot, continuing her amazingly consistent season with a winning mark of 39-10.5

Nadeau, meanwhile, put almost two feet between her previous PR, set a week ago at the Whitefish ARM Invitational. She marked 39-9.5.

She didn’t win Saturday, but Thompson Falls’ Ellie Baxter ran PRs in all three distance races, including a second-place finish to Hellgate’s Rose Wiltse in the 3,200. Baxter’s time of 11:51.18 is fourth in Class B.

So maybe it wasn’t too bad out there for the distance runners.

“If it would stop raining,” Kastner, who wasn’t having it, said. “The rain was killing us.”
