Krause skies out, Glacier sweeps Pack-Kat Dual
GLACIER — The weather had to be encouraging for the runners at the Dr. Mike Nicosia Cat-Pack track and field dual held Thursday.
It was for the throwers, too.
Glacier junior Aiden Krause had a huge discus throw of 181 feet, 7 inches, and added another win and PR in the shot put as the Wolfpack swept the team titles from the host Wildcats and Kats.
Krause’s heave was nearly 20 feet farther than his previous personal record of 162-11, set Saturday at the rainy Archie Roe Invitational. He’s 14-plus feet clear of the next-best throws in Class AA (Missoula Sentinel’s Danny Sirmon) and the state (Hamilton’s Andrew Burrows).
His mark of 50-1.5 in the shot put moves him up to No. 7 in AA.
The Wolfpack boys won 13 of 17 events and outscored Columbia Falls 95-41. They swept the hurdles; Glacier’s Xavier Stout joined a host of AA athletes to clear 6-2 in the high jump; only three have gone higher this spring.
Jeff Lillard won the 200 in a quick 22.74 seconds; Ty Olsen (triple) and Caleb Brannan (long) completed a Glacier sweep of the jumps. Evan Barnes and Alex Hasumann split the hurdles races, and Ethan Anderson and Ethan Grant won the 400 and 800.
The Wildcats had their moments: Malaki Simpson won the 100 meters in a personal-best 11.01 seconds. That sits third in Class A; Lillard came across in 11.07.
Mason Bates won the javelin and the pole vault (11-6) for the Cats, and Quinn Clark took the 1,600. Columbia Falls’ short relay team had its best time this spring, 43.72.
Lane Voermans PR’d in both the shot put (49-7) and discus (153-0), and the latter sits second only to the aforementioned Burrows in Class A.
Glacier’s girls won nine events but used depth to overpower Columbia Falls 91-53. Leading the way was Kai Johnson, who won the shot put as usual, marking 39-8, and PR’d while taking the discus with a throw of 116-7.
Ally Sempf had a day for Columbia Falls, hitting PRs in the 100 meters (12.57 seconds) and 400 (58.45). Both teams rank No. 3 in Class A.
Her teammate Siri Erickson also sits third in the 800 after winning it 2:23.96 Thursday.
The Wildcats also won the short relay in 51.31, sixth-best in the class.
Courtney Hussion won the long jump and 100 hurdles, and the Cats also had wins from Courtney Hoerner (3,200) and Emma McAllister (pole vault).
The Pack brought home wins in the 200 (Kennady Garvin), 1,600 (Alyssa Vollertson), Emmery Schmidt (300 hurdles), Jaidyn Pevey (5-0 in the high jump), Karys Kamp (triple) and the long relay.
