Libby wins before rain suspends State A

BELGRADE — Rain halted proceedings at the State A softball tournament Thursday, leaving Libby, Columbia Falls and Polson to make up time on Friday.

Play was halted by rain and lighting at roughly 4:30; Columbia Falls (21-3) was scheduled to play Hamilton (17-8) and Polson was to battle Laurel at 5 p.m.

At 6:40 p.m. MHSA officials suspended play until 9 a.m. Friday.

Libby (14-11) opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Lewistown, and had begun its 3 p.m. game against Havre (19-4).

That game was suspended with Libby, the “road team.” up 2-0 going to the bottom of the second inning.

Mackenzie Foss continues to rake, hitting a solo homer in Libby’s two-run first inning, and finishing with three hits and three runs scored.

Peyton Waggoner’s two-run triple in the third inning put the Loggers ahead 4-1, and she came in on Lyndee McElmurry’s double to make it 5-1.

A 2-run double by the Eagles’ Emily Morris cut Libby’s lead to 5-4 in the fourth, but the Loggers answered: Phoenix hit a two-run single and Waggoner had another RBI base hit to push the gap back to 8-4.

Foss and Paisley MacDonald split the pitching, combining for eight strikeouts.
