BUTTE — After one day of competition, Helena High leads both sides of the State AA track and field meet at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

And wow, do the defending champion Bengals lead.

With Madilyn and Logan Todorovich going 1-2 in the high jump — and Logan winning the long jump with an all-class record leap of 19 feet, 4.5 inches — Helena has 74 points after nine events.

Gallatin scored an impressive 51 points Friday, and is way back. Missoula Hellgate is third at 32.5.

Hazel Bishop added a win in the 400 for the Bengals, finishing in 58.57 seconds. Madilyn Todorovich (59.68) was third in that race as well.

Helena piled up 39 points in the jumps alone: Makenzie Jackson tied for third with Flathead’s Kennedy Moore in the high jump, at 5-2; Reghan Skogen and Madilyn Todorovich went 4-5 in the long jump.

The Bravettes scored seven points Friday; besides Moore, Flathead was sixth in the short relay and got a sixth from Mikenna Conan in the 800 (a PR of 2:20.54).

Kelcey Copping and Alivia Rinehart are in Saturday’s finals for the 100 and 200 for Flathead; Bristol Lenz and Zoey Bortz are in the 100-meter hurdles finals.

Glacier scored 10 points thanks to junior Kai Johnson’s victory in the shot put. Her winning mark was 40-5.5; it came on her third throw. Gallatin’s Tessa Kamps was second at 40-2.75, which came on her fifth attempt. She marked 38-4.5 on her sixth and final try.

One other State AA record fell Friday: Billings West’s Alysa Keller heave of 156-3 was almost 12 feet beyond the record (with the “new” IAAF javelin) of 144-7, set by Glacier’s Keywana Larson in 2015. Keller has signed to compete at BYU.

Helena led the boys team race after eight events with 34 points. Bozeman, going 1-2 (Weston Brown and Nathan Neil) in the 3,200, was next at 32. Gallatin and Helena Capital were tied for third at 26.

Glacier scored 18 first-day points, good for sixth. Flathead had eight.

The Wolfpack started the day fast, winning the 400 relay — with Evan Barnes, Ethan Anderson, Jeff Lillard and Kash Goicoechea — in a blazing 42.03 seconds.

The rest of their points came from Lillard, who finished second in the 400 to Gallatin’s Nash Coley, who won in 49.70. Lillard came across in 49.97.

Lillard also made Saturday’s finals in the 100 and 200, as did teammates Anderson and Alex Hausmann in the 110-meter hurdles.

Flathead’s Brody Thornsberry advanced to the 100 finals, and so did teammate William Hollensteiner in the 200.

Thornsberry had a third-place finish in the long jump to provide most of the Braves’ points. Junior Trevin Olivier hit his PR, 13-6, to place fifth in the pole vault for Flathead.
