MISSOULA — Polson had boys doubles and girls singles champions Friday at the Class A State Tennis Tournament, and the Polson boys nabbed the team title to boot, its first in a decade.

Owen McElwee and Trent Wilson were the boys doubles champs, defeating Billings Central’s Matthew Newbury and Gabbo Giammattei, 6-3, 6-3.

Clara Todd bested Columbia Falls’ Cloey Ramage, who’d dealt her the first set loss of the season last week at divisionals. Todd won 6-1, 6-1.

Polson almost had another state champion in Torrin Ellis, who lost to Hamilton’s Andy Purcell in a marathon match. Purcell won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Divisional champ Ryan Beagle of Libby ended up third after falling to Purcell in the semifinals.

Polson pair Colter Wilson and Tate Barentsen were fifth, and Whitefish duo Mason Kelch and Dane Hunt were third after they were bounced by Newbury/Giammattei in semifinals.

Also from Polson, doubles pair Lucy Violett and Katie Smith ended up fifth.

The Miles City girls won their first state title since 1991. Comprehensive team scores were not available.
