Loosely based on the Biblical Book of Job, “God’s Favorite” tells the story of a wealthy Long Island family in 1970s Long Island who are visited by an unusual messenger from God and sent into a spiral of misfortune, as the main character, Joe Benjamin, refuses to abandon his religious identity.
When the Devil makes a bet with God that he can turn anyone away from their piety, God is so sure of Benjamin’s devotion that he selects him to endure all the nasty tricks the Devil can summon.
The temptations and afflictions strike fast and furiously at Joe and his family. But the jokes and humorous wit fly almost as fast in this contemporary morality tale. The play boasts all the comedic charm of a Neil Simon script while also baring a lot of emotion and passion that is also typical of his plays.
“I am so proud of this cast. Last year we produced ‘The Odd Couple’ and it was such a big hit with our students and with our audiences. It made our department want to do another Neil Simon play. He is such a great writer, and it is fun for all of us to rediscover his wit and comedic timing, and ‘God’s Favorite’ seemed like the perfect show for this year. As a student, I was in ‘God’s Favorite’ in 1985 at Flathead High, so it was fun to revisit the play,” said Greg Adkins, the play’s director.
“Laughter is often the best medicine, and I know we laughed every day during this process,” Adkins added.
The cast of “God’s Favorite” includes Alden Lamson, Gabrielle Cantrell-Musson, Maeva Malcheski, Anya Rountree, Brenna Ernst, Claire Ennis, Titus Bertelsen and Kaylin Stein.
The technical crew includes Gabrielle Leduc, Blake Lindemann, Myla Lamson, Daniel Cole, Zaden Stout, Toben Mallo, Haley Hill, Drew Crane, Tregan Blades, Hayden Holloway and K Perigen.
