Show celebrates the music of the 60s
Cowboy Country, with special guest vocalists Joe Procita and the Shady Ladies, will take the stage at the Kalispell Eagles Ballroom on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. for their Celebrate the 60s Show.
The three-hour nonstop dancing and listening extravaganza will feature the music of vintage rock and roll artists such as The Beatles, The Chiffons, the Dixie Cups, Roy Orbison, Peter, Paul & Mary, Elvis Presley, Paul Anka, The Animals, The Drifters, Herman’s Hermits, and many more.
Cowboy Country is primarily a country-western band that also plays early rock and roll.
The band was founded seven years ago by co-leaders Sandy Matheny as lead vocalist and Karla West on piano and vocal harmony.
Matheny has performed as a soloist for much of her musical career, accompanying herself on guitar. She has recorded two solo albums. West, former director of the Glacier Jazz Stampede, has been a regular performer in the Flathead Valley for 30 years leading the Dixieland band, Rocky Mountain Rhythm Kings, and the Flathead Ragtime Society Orchestra. These ladies are joined by lead guitarist/vocalist Scott Sorenson who has been a member and leader of many bands over the past 25 years. Sorenson enjoys playing and singing the music of country rock artists such as Alan Jackson and Charlie Daniels. Cowboy Country’s fiddle player is Connie Rudie who is also a member of the Glacier Symphony. Rudie sings vocal harmonies as well as playing a great fiddle part in songs such as Down at the Twist & Shout and San Antonio Rose. The band’s drummer is Chuck Martin, who has played with numerous groups in the Valley. Chuck’s versatile drumming style is a natural fit for the Cowboy Country repertoire.
The Shady Ladies vocal group is made up of five great singers: Wendy Nugyen, Valeri McGarvey, Dianne Guenther, Sandy Matheny, and Connie Rudie. The group is accompanied by Karla West and has a repertoire consisting mostly of vintage rock ‘n’ roll tunes as well as standards from the 1930s and 1940s. The Ladies will be featured on many tunes throughout the show including Petula Clark’s “Downtown”, The Supremes’ hit “Stop! In the Name of Love”; and the show will end with the popular Fifth Dimension hit from 1969 “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In.”
The Celebrate the 60s show/dance will also feature outstanding guest vocalist Joe Procita. He was a guest vocalist with Cowboy Country in 2018 for the very first Celebrate the 60s show.
