New Horizons Band plays concert Oct. 19
The Flathead New Horizons Band is returning after a two-year hiatus with a concert on Oct. 19.
The concert is at 7 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel in Kalispell.
The band is unique in that it provides instrumental music instruction for senior citizens. The concert will include well-known popular tunes.
Eileen Alexander, director of the band, said the group plays music in an inviting group setting.
“We welcome folks who have never played a band instrument, never read music and teach them to play in a group setting,” Alexander said.
The group was founded in 2010 and plays concerts at community events. It rehearses weekly March through December and is open to new members including those younger than 50.
“Music has many physical, mental and emotional benefits for the aging senior,” Alexander said.
Selections for the concert include a march, a hymn, medleys from “Sound of Music,” “Oklahoma,” a little country flavor, jazz tunes, rock and roll, and a return to Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. Kids tunes include medleys from “Mary Poppins,” “Wizard of Oz,” Disney favorites and many more.
