SIDNEY — The Polson golfers appear to travel well, with both the girls and boys teams seizing first-day leads at the State A golf tournament at the Sidney Country Club.

Carson Hupka is tied with Corvallis golfer Brady Powell for the boys lead after shooting a 70 Friday; Pirate teammates Hunter Emerson (71), Christian Lund (76) and Espn Fisher (76) are all in the top 10 and give Polson a team score of 293.

Defending champion Laurel, with Carson Hackmann among three players at 71, is second at 301 strokes. Corvallis is third at 316.

Meanwhile Polson’s Ashley Maki shot a 75 to open up a four-shot over Frenchtown ace Katie Lewis after 18.

The Pirates also saw Kyliee Seifert shoot 85 and Kila Cannon come in at 91, and have a 13-stroke lead over Billings Central in the team race, 354-367.

Hamilton is third at 392.

The Pirates are defending girls state champions, while the boys are seeking their first title since 1996 and second overall. The tournament concludes Saturday.
