Hockaday hosts juried Plein Air Glacier: Paint Out — The outdoor painting event will feature an exhibition, sale and hikes
The Hockaday Museum of Art hosts the 17th annual Plein Air Glacier: Paint Out, Exhibition and Sale, an outdoor experience featuring painters from around the state and country painting in Glacier National Park and nearby Swan and Flathead valleys.
Artists will paint outdoors in the fresh air (en plein air) Aug. 26 through 30 and will have their work exhibited at the museum from Aug. 31 through Oct. 5.
Painting outdoors is a centuries-old tradition for adventurous souls who brave encounters with Montana’s rugged natural landscapes, wildlife and unpredictable changing weather conditions in exchange for the opportunity to paint from real life.
Take a primer in plein air painting through a three-day workshop taught by former Plein Air Glacier participant, Idaho-based artist Bonnie Griffith, Aug. 22-24. The cost to attend is $225. Register by emailing education@hockadaymuseum.com. Space is limited.
See painters Wanda Mumm and Robb Akey on location by attending two free hikes into Glacier National Park’s east and west sides. The easy-to-moderate hikes will be led by Glacier National Park Conservancy educators from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 27-28. Locations will be announced, but the hikes are expected to be about 2 to 3.5 miles. Register by emailing education@hockadaymuseum.com or calling 755-6268. Space is limited.
Art created during the event will also be available for purchase during the exhibit. The fundraiser sale and preview reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at the museum, 302 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. There will be live music and curator and announcements of curator and artist choice awards. Refreshments will be served. The cost to attend is $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members.
Paintings may also be purchased online starting midnight Sept. 3, concluding Oct. 5, at https://hockadaymuseum.com/plein-air-glacier.
Proceeds from this fundraiser event benefit the museum’s educational programs and exhibitions and help support artists. The museum’s mission is to enrich the cultural life of the Flathead community and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park.
This year, 37 artists were selected by a panel of jurors to participate in the event including: Akey, Sandy Bridgewater, Jessica Bryant, Richie Carter, Pamm Ciupa, M.A. Cochran, Aaron Cordell Johnson, Leah Cupino, Gwen Day, Genevieve DeLorme, Therese Ely, Natalie Fisher, Linda Franson, Denise Gilroy, Bonnie Zahn Griffith, Gail Hansen, DG House, Ella Kuzyk, Dave Mihalic, Mumm, Sheri Nagy, Karl Oerhtman, Mark Ogle, Stephanie Pointer, Alyssa Shaw, Sheryl Silberman, Robert Spannring, William Stebe, Lindsay Jane Ternes, Melanie Thompson, Ron Ukrainetz, Kristen VanDenburgh, James K.
