Freeride skiers face tough conditions at Grand Targhee and Red Mountain
The Flathead Freeride Club traveled to Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming and Red Mountain in British Columbia last weekend to compete in IFSA Junior National level competitions.
Over 340 athletes age 12-18 from all across the U.S. and Canada competed in tough conditions over multiple days for a chance at qualifying for the America’s Championship in April. Athletes dealt with a range of conditions from very firm snow and ice to deep fresh powder along with challenging weather delays.
At Targhee, Katie Hersom took home 2nd place in the U19 women's category; Christopher Noone finished 10th in a stacked U19 men’s field; Jesse Deets finished 7th over all in his first national event for the U15 category. Also competing were Metta Campbell, Harry Trufant, Kane Nissen, and Townsend Reed.
Flathead Freeride athletes Amelia Mason, Bodie Mason, Owen Croskrey and Anders Soyland were at Red Mountain. They were faced with unseasonably warm conditions, rain, and finally ice forcing the competition finals to be canceled.
The club travels to Fernie, British Columbia this coming weekend for a regional competition.
