Whitefish Ski Museum holds encore presentation of ‘Raising Hell Roaring’

| March 28, 2024 12:00 AM

The Ski Heritage Center Museum will present an encore showing of “Raising Hell Roaring” at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center on April 4.

“When the March 9 event sold out, we received a lot of inquiries about scheduling another show for people that missed out on the first event,” said Ski Museum Director Tim Hinderman.

“Raising Hell Roaring” is a homegrown multimedia, feature-length presentation that tells the story of skiing on Big Mountain and throughout the region, from Logan Pass to the Cabinet Mountains, beginning in the 1930s. Utilizing rare archival film footage, photos, books, letters and first-hand accounts, the stories from seven decades of skiing are presented in a fast-paced, sometimes hilarious and occasionally tragic fashion that newcomers and long-time participants alike will appreciate.

An added attraction for the encore show will be the announcement of four new inductees into the Ski Heritage Center Hall of Fame. The Class of 2024 inductees include Sverre Askevold, Chuck Creon, Ole Dalen and Lyle Rutherford.

Askevold was the developer, owner and operator of the iconic Viking Lodge on Whitefish Lake. He built the first ski jump on Big Mountain in 1950.

Creon was a founding member of the Hell Roaring Ski Club in 1935 and, with Lyle Rutherford, built the first rope tow ski lift on Big Mountain in 1949.

Dalen was a founding member of the Hell Roaring Ski Club in 1935 and 10th Mountain Division veteran from WWII.

Rutherford was a founding member of the Hell Roaring Ski Club in 1935 and, with Creon, built the first rope tow ski lift on Big Mountain in 1939.

“Raising Hell Roaring Encore Presentation” will play at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center in Whitefish Middle School on Thursday, April 4. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at whitefishskimuseum.org. Adult tickets are $20; Students, Military and Seniors tickets are $15.

The Ski Museum is located at 705 Wisconsin Avenue in the historic Saddle Club cabin adjacent to the Stumptown Ice Den in Whitefish. The museum features a 10th Mountain Division “Ski Troops” exhibit, a photographic exhibit of showing the history of skiing in the Flathead Valley and on Big Mountain, a Hall of Fame honoring the ski pioneers and local skiing legends, a life-size cutaway reproduction of the interior the Hellroaring Ski Cabin circa 1935 and a video library featuring rare footage of skiing in the Valley and around Montana in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday. For Ski Heritage Membership Information, visit whitefishskimuseum.org/memberships
