Flathead County is looking to sell its 36.9 acres in Lower Valley originally purchased for a regional septage treatment facility to the Lakeside County Water and Sewer District.

County commissioners on March 28 approved a resolution of intent to sell the property for $1.5 million, which is the same purchase price the county paid last fall. Commissioners are set to make a final decision on April 16 at 9 a.m.

The property on Wiley Dike Road had been planned for the county to construct the treatment facility. Commissioners on March 19 approved an agreement that turns over the construction and operation of the facility to Lakeside.

The county said it determined it would be more efficient for Lakeside to handle the project.

The county has an estimated 30,000 septic tanks that need to have septage removed every three to five years. Septage from the county is currently disposed of through land application, which includes injecting the untreated septage into the soil.
