Flathead Story Concerts return with inspiring stories told live

| May 16, 2024 12:00 AM

True personal essays, short stories and poems will be shared live by local storytellers during the Flathead Story Concerts’ next event on Tuesday, May 21.

The evening of stories takes place at Sacred Waters Brewing in Kalispell. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and stories are from 6-7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited.

This is the third community event co-hosted by Sacred Waters Brewing and story concert creators/curators Barbara and Glenn Schiffman. The Schiffmans are local writers and story coaches who have taught classes on crafting a tellable story at Flathead Valley Community College and online since 2023.

Flathead Story Concerts are live spoken-word events that are themed and curated. They are not mics. Inspired by The Moth Radio Hour and PBS-TV’s “Stories From the Stage,” the Schiffmans began hosting them in 2023 to help Flathead locals share memorable stories, as Glenn did at live events in Los Angeles and Spokane in past years.

The theme for the May 21 event is “All in the Family” — true and fictional stories and poems about biological or extended families, human-animal bonds and more.

Spring 2024 tellers include Rebecca Ashcraft, Katy Carey, Susan Hartman, Craig Naylor (poet), Dixon Rice, Glenn Schiffman, and Alan Solum. Most of them shared other original stories at 2023 events and are members of Authors of the Flathead.

Authors of the Flathead is an ongoing story concert sponsor, along with The Bookshelf in Kalispell and Sacred Waters Brewing.

The next Flathead Story Concert at Sacred Waters is set for Sept. 17. Potential tellers with inspiring or surprising stories can submit them for consideration until Aug. 15.
