MISSOULA — Alex Hoerner scored two goals, Liam Ells and Creed Norick also tallied and Glacier’s boys topped Missoula Big Sky 4-2 in Western AA boys soccer Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Glacier’s girls outshot Missoula Big Sky 19-8, yet still lost their soccer match 4-2 to the Eagles at MCPS Stadium.

Hoerner assisted on the Wolfpack’s first goal, by Liam Ells, in the 12th minute and then, after Big Sky’s Cash Bolenbaugh cut the gap to 2-1, scored twice to create a 4-1 cushion.

Brayden Jenkinson assisted on Hoerner’s first goal, in the 47th minute.

The Pack improved to 3-2 with the victory; they play Butte at home Friday. Big Sky is 2-2-2.

The outcome was a bit of a stunner, since Big Sky is playing without the injured Avery DeCoite, who had 12 goals last season. Instead the Eagles saw Emma Keller, Lauren Martin, Peyton Reynolds and Berkley Widaman find the net.

“We’re shocked by it,” Glacier girls coach Doug Mello said. “Credit to them, they won, but we continually had chances to score and we’ve kind of hit a wall with putting the ball in the net. Their goalkeeper (Ady Staples) had a nice day but we missed some opportunities.”

Glacier was also missing starting freshman keeper Aerin Todd, who is out with a hip injury suffered last week. The Wolfpack did get goals from Emmery Schmidt, her fifth of the season, and Gracie Winkler, her fourth. Amelia Remley and Neve Travis had the assists. The Pack, which plays several freshmen, fell to 2-2-1. Big Sky is 2-2-2.

“We’re hoping to pull it all together against Butte tomorrow,” Mello said. “The girls are disappointed but we’re a long ways from the end of the season.”

Each team had four corner kicks.
