Mustangs take 3rd straight from Range Riders Wednesday

BILLINGS — A ninth-inning rally came up one run short, and the Glacier Range Riders fell to the Billings Mustangs 8-7 in Pioneer League baseball Wednesday at Dehler Park.

Jack O’Dowd and Charlie Muniz homered as the Mustangs turned a 5-0 fifth-inning deficit into a 6-5 lead in the sixth. The gap grew to 8-5 before the Range Riders broke through again in the ninth.

Gabe Howell and pinch-hitter Kyle Ashworth sandwiched a walk and a single around a flyout, and both moved up on a wild pitch.

TJ Clarkson’s RBI groundout scored Howell; John Mabry’s two-out single brought in Ashworth. Then Jack Lynch flied out for the final out.

It was the third straight win for Billings, which is trying to turn the tables after losing five straight games in Kalispell last week.

Clarkson, Kingston Liniak and Angel Mendoza all hit solo homers for the Range Riders. Mendoza’s shot, his sixth, put his team up 4-0 in the fifth inning. Logan Beard hit an RBI single to make it 5-0 in the same frame.

Jared Engman (1-3) threw four scoreless innings for Glacier, but the Mustangs got to him in the fifth — O’Dowd hit a two-run homer, his 18th — and again in the sixth. In the latter, Cameron Bowen greeted Engman with a double and scored when Patrick Mills reached on an error, Muniz then hit a three-run shot to center and the Mustangs led for good.

Glacier was hurt by its defense: Billings’ last three runs were unearned; and Billings scored its first run via wild pitch. The two teams continued their six-game series Thursday night.
