Failing justice system

I would like to address all of the law enforcement officers who serve the Flathead Valley and surrounding areas. I would like to apologize for the utterly weak and feckless judges and prosecutors who are supposed to serve and protect the citizens of this county.

Time and time and time again we read in the paper of yet another lawless criminal getting sentenced to a suspended sentence in exchange for admitting that they did the crime they are accused of. Wow! Just admit your guilt and out the door you go. Please save us the official blather of the following edict. The person is "to serve a suspended sentence with the Montana State Department of Corrections." Sound scary to anybody?

A recent Inter Lake featured and article about a man who threatened police and his family with death then and took law enforcement on a joy ride through Kalispell, Evergreen and Creston before exiting the vehicle and finally being Tasered into submission. Where were the eluding  and appropriate traffic violation charges? Officers' and citizens' lives were put in abject danger. This incident occurred in 2023 and now in 2025 this suspended sentence is how a danger to this community is rewarded.

Our law enforcement officers risk life and limb to protect all of us and the thanks they get is that these perpetrators get off with a paltry finger wagging from the court.

Thank you to our police, sheriff's deputies and state Highway Patrol for fulfilling the oath that they took to "protect and serve" all of us. It would be nice if the court system here could follow suit and drop the hammer hard on criminals in the Flathead. If you do the crime then you can darn well do the time!

I won't hold my breath.

Style beating substance

In comedy, politics and media, there are two dominant ways to persuade — and America seems to be rewarding the wrong one.

The first is what I call the Message style. Think of Dave Chappelle or Fareed Zakaria: deliberate, structured and layered. They build a case, give context and leave you with something to think about long after the conversation ends.

The second is the Moment style. Think of Matt Rife or the cable news pundit who thrives on viral clips: fast, confident and designed to grab attention instantly. Every line is engineered for impact, not depth.

The problem? Our attention economy overwhelmingly rewards the Moment over the Message. Whoever looks calmest wins. Whoever makes the audience laugh or cheer wins. Whoever forces the other person into a long explanation has already won in the eyes of the crowd, even if the facts say otherwise.

The Message might win the debate, but the Moment wins the clip. And in today’s media landscape, clips are the currency of influence.

If we want a healthier public discourse, we have to stop rewarding the flash of the Moment and start valuing the substance of the Message. Otherwise, we’ll keep confusing applause for truth.

Another Yellowstone Club?

After waiting in the great town of Lakeside attempting to make a left-hand turn, I really wonder who the Flathead County Planning Board is representing with its 4-1 vote on the proposed 369 house and golf course project.

After attending the meetings in Lakeside, it appeared that very few people were in support of this plan. In fact, the only folks that supported it were developers or people who would benefit financially from this idea.

I would like to make a suggestion that potential buyers first check out the Yellowstone Club or Iron Horse Club before compounding the already existing problem of over crowding in Lakeside.
